Running, Rolling, and Strolling: This Pack Loves the Nature Center

This article is also featured in the 2025 Annual Giving Campaign.

Every acre tells a story. Some stories aren’t just about the land—they’re about the joy, healing, and friendship it inspires.

Meet Laura Person, devoted member, trail runner, and dog mom to three very special pups. On any given day at Rowe Woods, you might find her running 20 miles training for an ultramarathon, jogging alongside her energetic dog Harlow, strolling peacefully with Forrest in his stroller, or adventuring with Lt. Dan, a two-legged therapy dog.

For Laura, Cincinnati Nature Center is more than a place to visit—it’s a place that supports her adventures and her whole pack.

Lt. Dan is a certified therapy dog and social media star known across the country. Born with a limb deformity, he had both hind legs amputated at six months old—but that didn’t stop him. With his doggie wheelchair, he hikes safely beside Laura, sniffing the air, greeting hikers, and soaking up the beauty of the woods. At Rowe Woods, Lt. Dan is something of a local celebrity—visitors light up when they see him rolling down the trail, ready for the next adventure.

Harlow keeps pace with Laura mile for mile. Together, they run on the diverse trail system at RoweWoods. With so many loops and connections, Laura easily builds long, challenging routes or spontaneous, winding runs. It’s where she trained for her ultramarathons—logging 20+ mile days under the shade of the trees she loves.

Forrest has severe scoliosis, and long walks are difficult for him—so he rides in style. With his stroller, he gets to enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and the peaceful forest canopy.Laura and Forrest always enjoy the all-accessible Mashburn Family DiscoveryTrail, which allows him to soak in the world around him. As Laura says,“There’s a trail for everyone. If you want to adventure further, you can—but you don’t have to.”

For Laura, Rowe Woods has become her sanctuary. It’s where she feels safe running alone. It’s where her dogs—each with different needs—can all enjoy the outdoors. It’s where she takes her favorite dog portraits. And as a lifelong dog rescuer and foster mom, she cherishes a place that welcomes every kind of hiker—on two legs, four legs, or two wheels.

“The trails are so well maintained. No matter which dog I’m with, or whether I’m running with friends, I know it’s going tobe beautiful, clean, and accessible. The staff are wonderful. The amenities are great. It’s just… special.”
