Evening Nature Knowledge Series
Enjoy an evening with an expert as presenters share their knowledge on natural history topics. These diverse programs address a wide range of topics and mirror CNC’s Monday Volunteer Training Workshops. They are perfect for the working adult who may be too busy to attend daytime programs. This series offers great resources for Member Naturalists and other nature enthusiasts and mentors to glean new information for their own programs. Presenters vary by topic. Programs are offered Monday nights as scheduled between September and May from 7-9 p.m. Free for member adults, $5 for nonmember adults. Preregistration is required.
Dec. 5, 7 pm -- A Naturalist Afield
Join photographer Steve Maslowski as he shares his memories of growing up with his father Karl Maslowski. CNC founding member Karl turned a strong love of the outdoors into a career of writing and photography. Son Steve worked with his father for many years, and has continued the tradition of wildlife photography. Learn about the delights and challenges of wildlife videography from this first-hand account with Steve. Members free; nonmembers $8.
Nature Knowledge Night -- Animals in the Movies
This program explains the secrets behind working snakes and other "non-trainable" animals in the movies, as well as how to train animal actors for complex behaviors on command. Video clips from well known movies are shown, followed by a similar live animal which is used to demonstrate the behavior. The presenter and her dog were featured on PAX TV's "Animals Are People Too!" on Animal Planet and on "The Late Show With David Letterman". Lesa Scheifele, a graduate of the elite Exotic Animal Training and Management Program at Moorpark College in California, uses her animal training skills to teach about endangered species and to enrich the lives of captive animals by providing training based in play and curiosity.
Nature Knowledge Night -- Coal in Ohio
Ohio Citizen Action has worked for clean air and water and lower utility rates since 1975. Learn about how new federal regulation of coal-fired power plants may impact your utility rates, public health and the environment. Ohio ranks #1 in the nation for toxic air emissions, and pollution from coal-fired power plants contributes to four of the five leading causes of death in the U.S. If you pay a utility bill or own a pair of lungs, this issue affects you. Come learn more. Rachael Belz is the Coal Program Organizer and Melissa English is the Development Director for Ohio Citizen Action.
