Artistic Expression Classes

Nature is the inspiration behind these programs. Express your love of nature through a variety of creative processes such as photography, painting, drawing, or crafts.

Joy of Fall, Joy of Paint

For intermediate and advanced artists of all media. Participants must bring their own materials (a list will be provided). En plein air (painting outdoors) is one of the most rewarding experiences in painting. The class will work on the beautiful grounds at Rowe Woods.  We will briefly discuss equipment and how to make the most of this experience. A brief demonstration will quickly help achieve correct color and value. How do you mix your paints? Art is not a formula; the instructor will focus on each individual’s style of painting  (botanical-abstract). She believes every artist is different, having different ideas to proclaim with different needs in learning. Emphasis will be on design and composition. There will be an introduction to a process called COLOR SPACE.

$150 CNC members, $165 nonmembers. Nancy Foureman is a professional painter, teaching workshops in New England and the West. She is an instructor at the Richmond Art Museum. www.nancyfoureman.com.

Making Mud Cloth (Modified Bogolan Fini)

The seemingly simple cloth of white designs on a black background represents the serious artistic manner of telling stories of village life in Mali, Africa.  Understand a bit of Malian culture while learning about bogolan fini, as well as how that dyeing process is modified outside Mali.  Use your own mud to create personal stories on natural fiber cloth. Registrants will receive a list of materials to bring to class. Working with fibers since 1979, Judy Dominic uses non-standard techniques, naturals and odd materials to create functional and decorative fiber art. www.judydominic.com. Members $70, nonmembers $90
